Spring is Calling: Preparing Your Outdoor Stone for a Santa Cruz Summer

Here in Santa Cruz, February is what I like to call "the bridge month." One day, we’re watching the winter swells crash against the cliffs under a gray sky, and the next, the sun breaks through with a warmth that makes you realize spring isn’t just coming, it’s right around the corner.

As the rain starts to taper off and the days get a little longer, my mind always wanders outside. For three generations, the Farris family has been building and restoring stone features across the Bay Area, and if there is one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: The best summer memories are built in February.

When the sun finally stays out for good, you don’t want to be staring at a mossy patio or a stained fountain. You want to be firing up the grill and pouring a cold drink. Here is how we’re thinking about the "Spring Refresh" at GLF Enterprises this month, and how you can get your sanctuary ready for the season ahead.

     1. The Winter Audit: Checking the Foundation Our coastal air is beautiful, but the salt, wind, and heavy winter rains can be tough on natural stone. This month, I encourage you to take a "maintenance walk" around your property.
Look closely at your outdoor paths, retaining walls, and patios. Are there stones that have shifted with the wet soil? Is there a layer of slick moss forming on your limestone steps? Catching these small shifts now prevents them from becoming "big project" headaches in July. Just like we talk about maintaining our health, maintaining our stone is about longevity and safety.

     2. Deep Clean and Seal: Giving Stone Its Glow Back Natural stone is a living material, it breathes. After a long winter, your granite countertops or slate walkways might look a little dull. February is the perfect time for a deep clean.
For our clients, I always recommend using pH-neutral cleaners specifically designed for stone. Avoid the harsh "spring cleaning" chemicals you find at big-box stores, as they can strip the natural seal of the stone. If water is no longer "beading up" on your outdoor surfaces, it’s time for a reseal. A fresh seal doesn’t just make the stone look rich and vibrant; it protects it from the summer spills to come (looking at you, BBQ sauce and red wine!).

     3. Dreaming of the "Outdoor Room" Spring is the season of rebirth, and for many of our neighbors in Santa Cruz and the Bay Area, that means reimagining the backyard. We are seeing a huge shift toward the "Outdoor Room" extending the comfort of your kitchen or living room right out into the garden.

If you’ve been dreaming of a monolithic stone fire pit for those cool coastal evenings, or a custom Cantera stone fountain to bring the soothing sound of water to your patio, now is the time to start the conversation. Planning in February means we can hand-select the slabs, handle the fabrication with the precision it deserves, and have everything installed by the time the first spring flowers bloom. Whether it’s a rugged, textured granite that feels at home in the redwoods or a sleek, modern quartzite for a Westside patio, the stone you choose today is the backdrop for your family’s summer stories.

     4. A Sanctuary Under the Sun In my last post, I talked about the importance of finding your "stillness." There is no better place to find that peace than in a home that flows seamlessly from the inside out. When we install a stone walkway or a custom outdoor kitchen, we aren't just "doing a job." We are laying the groundwork for your Sunday morning coffees, your graduation parties, and your quiet sunsets.

As we move through February, I hope you take a moment to look at your outdoor spaces not for what they are, but for what they can be.

From my family to yours, let’s get ready to welcome the light. If you need a hand evaluating your stone or want to start dreaming up a new spring project, give us a call or stop by. We’re here to help you build something that stands the test of time.
