Don't Let Your Project Fall Short: The Importance of Ordering Enough Material

Starting a renovation project is an exciting time, full of possibilities. You've picked out the perfect stone or tile, you're ready to get started, and you've calculated the exact square footage you need. But what if we told you that ordering the exact amount of material is a risk you can't afford to take?

At GLF Enterprises, we've seen this scenario play out more times than we can count. A homeowner orders just enough stone or tile for their project, and then a few years down the road, a tile cracks or they need to replace a small section. They go back to the vendor only to find that the specific color, style, or material is no longer being produced. Now, their beautiful, cohesive space has an mismatched section because the original material is gone forever.

The Power of Overages: Plan for the Unexpected
This is why we strongly recommend ordering a material overage. An overage is a little extra material—typically 10-15% more than your measured square footage—that you keep on hand for future repairs. Think of it as a small insurance policy for your home. Keeping some extra stone or tile in your garage or storage area means you're prepared for unexpected accidents. A dropped pan in the kitchen, a heavy object falling on the floor, or a hairline crack that appears over time—these things happen. Having a few spare pieces on hand means you can seamlessly replace the damaged section without a panicked search for a discontinued product.

The Art of Slab Layout: Beyond the Numbers
The same principle applies to larger projects involving stone slabs for countertops, backsplashes, and other features. While a tight measurement might suggest you can get by with fewer slabs, it doesn't account for the artistry of the final installation.

Many slabs, especially those with natural veining and unique patterns, require careful layout to ensure the final product looks cohesive and intentional. Trying to squeeze a project out of the bare minimum of material often leaves you with limited options. This can result in misaligned veins at seams, a backsplash that doesn't flow naturally from the countertop, or a waterfall edge that looks disconnected. Having an extra slab to work with gives your fabricator the flexibility to match patterns, align movement, and create a truly stunning final result that looks like a single, continuous piece of stone. It's the difference between a project that simply "fits" and one that looks meticulously crafted.

Ultimately, ordering enough material isn't about being wasteful; it's about being prepared. It ensures the longevity and beauty of your renovation for years to come. Don't let a small oversight today lead to a big headache tomorrow.
